Frontline Observation and Waste Isolation: Teams start the lifecycle where value creation happens (the Gemba). Multi-disciplinary groups visually map workflows to identify non-value-added wastes (Muda), such as excessive operator movement, transport hurdles, and process defects.
Rapid Root-Cause Analysis: Using simple, hands-on methods for problem solving and identification, front-line employees employ techniques such as the 5 Whys approach and fishbone diagrams to get past symptoms of problems to determine the core issue, usually called the root cause.
Targeted Execution and Testing: Teams implement low-cost changes within a tight time frame (usually 2 to 5 days), including adjustments to ergonomic design, assembly operations, and software configuration settings.
Standardization and Metric Verification: In case the data from metrics proves that the cycle time reduces or the defect rate decreases, the quality assurance team makes the improvements permanent by standardizing the process and replicating the solution across equivalent manufacturing cells.
