Upstream quality control differs from standard quality control because its main goal is to identify and resolve any defects at the source of the inputs (either raw materials, conceptual design or early processing), thus eliminating any large cost associated with fixing defective products, due to the upstream approach.

Downstream QC encompasses the processes of verifying that products are manufactured in accordance with the quality parameters expected by the customer. In most industries, after products have been delivered to customers, the QC activities performed on finished products and their shipping and logistics are classified as downstream operations.
In standard manufacturing, downstream QC involves examining outbound finished products and supervising the logistics that deliver the product to the consumer.
Finished Goods Testing: Testing outgoing finished product at dimensional specifications, for packaging and for performance specifications.
Audits: Documenting the shipping and transportation process to ensure the product reaches the customer without damage.
Corrective Actions: Using data to trace any defective products back to their source on the production floor, and to initiate corrective action.
In the biopharmaceutical and chemical industries, the downstream QC of products is more complex and involves the key activities of isolating and purifying a product from a complex technical matrix, whereas upstream processing is more straightforward and requires little technical expertise.
For example, isolating and purifying an enzyme or protein from the original host cell and from any debris present, is accomplished using multiple processing steps such as using a combination of membrane filtration and column chromatography to concentrate, purify, and stabilize the product.
In Upstream, the focus is on preventing defects from occurring by selecting the best quality raw materials available, and designing to prevent defects during product configuration.
In Downstream, the focus is on reacting to and testing and measuring the finished goods against predetermined quality criteria.
